Care Guide
Skin Care & Bathing
Unlike most cats, Sphynx cats do not have fur to absorb the natural oils their skin produces. These oils can build up on the skin over time.
Some sources recommend bathing every 1-22 weeks but frequent bathing can actually stimulate the skin to produce more oil.
We recommend a gentler approach:
Use pet-safe wipes regularly to clean the skin, especially in skin folds.
Bathe every 1–2 months as needed.
Clean common oil areas such as:
- Neck folds
- Armpits
- Belly
- Tail
Less frequent bathing often helps the skin balance its natural oil production
When bathing:
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free cat shampoo
- Rinse thoroughly to avoid residue.
- Dry your Sphynx completely and keep them warm.
Ear Cleaning
Sphynx cats produce more ear wax than most breeds.
Check ears weekly and clean when needed using:
- A vet-approved ear cleaner
- Cotton rounds or gauze (avoid cotton swabs inside the ear canal)
Nail Care
Sphynx cats can accumulate oils around their nail beds.
- Trim nails every 2–3 weeks
- Gently wipe around the nail beds during grooming to remove oil buildup.
Temperature & Comfort
Without a fur coat, Sphynx cats are more sensitive to temperature.
They enjoy:
- Warm blankets
- Heated cat beds
- Sunny windows
- Cozy sleeping spots
In cooler homes, sweaters or clothing designed for cats may help keep them comfortable.
Nutrition
A high-quality diet plays a big role in skin health.
Many Sphynx owners find that raw diets or high-quality protein-rich foods can help support healthy skin and may even reduce excess oil production.
Always ensure your cat receives:
- Balanced nutrition
- Adequate protein
- Fresh water daily
Consult with a veterinarian when transitioning diets.
Sun Exposure
Although Sphynx cats enjoy basking in the sun, their skin can burn.
- Limit prolonged direct sun exposure
- Provide shaded areas near windows
- Pet-safe sunscreen may be used if recommended by your veterinarian.
Social Needs
Sphynx cats are extremely people-oriented and thrive on companionship. They often:
- Follow their owners around the home
- Seek warmth by cuddling
- Enjoy interactive play
They do best in homes where they receive **plenty of attention and engagement
Routine Veterinary Care
Like all cats, Sphynx cats need regular veterinary care.
This includes:
- Annual checkups
- Vaccinations
- Parasite prevention
- Dental care
